Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I apply for the Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) program?

A: Every fall our recruiting team heads out to university career fairs to meet potential GET candidates. We are seeking chemical, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical, and civil engineers.  Interested candidates are invited to stop by our booth with your resume and introduce yourself.

If we miss you on our campus visit, potential candidates are invited to apply directly by email to: [email protected].  Please mention GET program in the subject line.

Q: How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

A: Algoma Steel has a strong history of offering apprenticeships across many trades.  Apprenticeships are always posted internally first, as many candidates join our production team to gain experience in operations prior to applying to an apprenticeship program.  If we cannot satisfy the posting internally we open it up to the general public by posting the opportunity on our website, in local and regional media, and at regional  colleges as appropriate.

Potential candidates are invited to apply through our Career Opportunities page.

Q: Does Algoma Steel offer internships or co-op placements?

A: Most years we offer co-op terms in electrical, mechanical and metallurgical engineering.  From time to time we also offer co-op opportunities in IT and Finance.  For co-op opportunities we recruit directly through select universities.  Alternatively, we encourage students to apply through our Career Opportunities page.

Q: How do you assess individual performance?

A: At Algoma Steel we assess employees during the probationary period and then annually at the close of each fiscal year.  Employees are assessed on individual key performance indicators which are closely linked to business objectives, and on behavioural competencies.  The process also includes a brief mid-year meeting with your manager, which is a great time to discuss initiatives you would like to be involved in, and career objectives in the short, mid and long term.

Q: What sorts of training and development opportunities are there at Algoma Steel?

A: Employees can expect to experience a range of training and development opportunities during their career at Algoma Steel, beginning with a comprehensive new hire orientation and safety induction.  From there, we offer on-the-job training, legislated training such as WHMIS, classroom-based learning and training on new company systems.  Algoma Steel also offers tuition reimbursement for those pursuing post-secondary studies in their field.
