Emergency Preparedness

Similar to other industrial facilities, Algoma Steel produces, uses, and transports chemicals that can be hazardous if released to the environment in the event of an emergency situation. For each of the regulated substances onsite, Algoma maintains Environmental Emergency Plans that would be implemented in the event of an emergency.

AREAS OF COMMITMENT

AIR

Algoma deploys a continuous improvement approach to reducing air emissions.  We have made great strides in the reduction of particulate emissions , having achieved a 65% reduction since 2002, and while efforts continue on this front, our current focus is on cokemaking emissions.

Algoma monitors air quality through two ambient air quality monitoring stations maintained by the company.

ENERGY

Algoma is a demonstrated partner in Canada’s commitment to the global reduction of greenhouse gases with a proven track record for reducing carbon emissions. Since 1993 we have reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 17%, even while increasing production 19%. This translates into an overall 54% reduction in our energy intensity per ton of steel and we continue to make strides towards further efficiencies.

WASTE

Steel is the most recycled material in the world. Easily recovered with magnets, steel is 100% recyclable and can be recycled time and time again without loss of quality. Every steelmaking heat at Algoma contains scrap steel which we recycle through our manufacturing process for new end-use applications. In addition, we recycle or reuse over 80% of all waste materials generated through our operation.

WATER

Algoma maintains a consistent program to treat process water, ensuring the water we release back into the environment meets or exceeds all requirements as set out by the Ontario Ministry of Environment. In keeping with our commitment to conservation, we recycle 45% of our water, greatly reducing our one time consumption of this valued resource.

NOISE

As a result of a comprehensive acoustic assessment, Algoma has developed a plan to reduce noise emissions from 11 sources throughout the steelworks.
