SAULT STE. MARIE, September 23, 2021 – Algoma Steel Inc. today announced they are supporting the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League and the Sault Female Hockey Association through a new multi-year investment program to help defer costs for families and ensure that programs, awards, coaching, and training remain strong, promoting healthy active living for our youth.
For a two-year period, Algoma is providing $35,000 per year to the Soo Pee Wee league and $15,000 per year for the Sault Female Hockey Association. All funds provided must be spent each year by the respective associations as a means to defer cost or increase services for the approximately 1,050 families involved.
“We are very pleased to support these local hockey programs for boys and girls in our community,” Algoma Steel Chief Executive Officer Michael McQuade remarked. “Pandemic impacts over the last year and a half have been difficult for families and reengaging in sports is a very positive step toward building back community. Our partnership is designed to ensure youth and their families have great programs and augmented training and services this season and next.”
Beverly Gordon, SFHA President commented on the donation, “We are tremendously grateful to Algoma Steel for their generous support of youth sports! Hockey is an expensive sport for girls to participate in, however, we all believe in the benefits and life-long lessons that girls learn when they play on sports teams. Supporting girls in sport is an investment in the future of not only Sault Ste. Marie but Canada and our global community.”
“When we first met with Algoma and discussed this partnership, our hope was for our work together to be a healthy boost to our program and the spirits of the families that we support” adds Nicole Clouthier, President, Soo Pee Wee Hockey League. “We are extremely appreciative of Algoma’s involvement and how the donation will allow us to provide a great experience over the next two years for all our players and their families.”
