Why Algoma?
The appeal of a large operation like Algoma is that there are more opportunities to climb or diversify. The interview process included a tour and it gave me great insight into the organization and potential career paths. We relocated to the Soo and my husband was able to secure a good job with a supplier organization.
Career Progression
I was hired as an electrical maintenance technician in the Plate and Strip Finishing department and moved over to the Plate and Strip Hot Mill before taking on a short assignment as the Health and Safety Representative for the Central Maintenance division. From there I took a posting for the electrical planner in Cokemaking which is where I am today as I train for my next role as a planner for the new electric arc steelmaking facility.
Everything you could possibly need, we have here – a machine shop, an auto repair shop for service vehicles, and nearly every type of trade. It’s so diverse and yet it’s all on one site.
What are the more challenging aspects of your job?
The processes and equipment differ greatly between departments. You need to rely on your technical knowledge and it makes you a much better troubleshooter.
Can you recall a project you found particularly interesting / satisfying?
I am really looking forward to being a part of the electric arc steelmaking team. I have never been involved in a project of this scale and to come in at the ground level is very exciting. It will be particularly satisfying to learn about all of the new technology and to develop the maintenance systems required to ensure a successful launch.
How would you describe the work culture?
The best part about working here is the people. They work hard, they help you out, and if you show an interest they let you run with it. For example, I am passionate about electrical safety so they allow me to dedicate time to building and delivering lock out and arc flash training.
Sault Ste. Marie offers great quality-of-life opportunities. How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I find the Soo a good mix of urban amenities and outdoor opportunities. We snowmobile, fish and boat and enjoy time at our camp. Living on the outskirts of town we enjoy country living with just a 15 minute commute.
